Power transformers in substations play a crucial role in adjusting the voltage of the electrical grid, either stepping up or stepping down high voltages. This process helps minimize losses due to joule heating during transmission and distribution.
For instance, transmission voltage can be maintained at 345 kV or higher, while distribution voltages can range from 11 kV to 66 kV. Lower distribution voltages are typically used for residential areas, while higher voltages are employed for industrial and commercial distribution networks.
